THE MORTAR

Certainly the mortar (murtale in dialect) is not a typical object only of Abruzzo, but we mention it because of its daily use in our village.

Here below we only see the picture of two of them, a wooden one and a metal one, both with their respective pestles. The one on the right seems to be particularly destined to a pharmaceutical use (for instance for the preparation of ancient remedies).
There were also some of them in stone, finely chiseled. Some of these can still be found in some of the houses of Fallo, they are now used for decoration or as ashtrays.

They were customarily used to grind coarse salt or pepper, or even to make breadcrumbs from dried bread, and in some rare cases, if needed, to grind grain to make enough flour for a pizza.

Some of these uses were not practical or easy, but then, more than ever, people were forced to do whatever the situation required.
