THE PITCHER This object was almost always present on the tables of our countrymen. It is a decorated clay container, usually of the capacity of one liter, in which wine was served during meals. It seem that it was primarily used for that purpose, in fact, it was often called "the wine pitcher" and rarely "the water pitcher". Before every meal, there was a family member, usually the same one, chosen to go to the wine cellar to fetch some wine. In some families the choice of this person was made with prudence, entrusting the task to the family member who was the least attracted to "Bacchus' nectar" (usually a young boy or girl who had not yet started drinking wine) in order to avoid supplementary consumption of the precious liquid. |
